Oral Hygiene Tips
Brushing
In the opinion of Dental Hygienists and Dentists at Gentle Family & Implant Dentistry of Laredo, brushing should be done using the softest tooth brush bristles available. All teeth should be brushed using a circular motion on all tooth surfaces. To reach molars in the back part of the mouth, one can close the mouth a little to allow the brush to reach.
Brushing the tongue is recommended since the top surface can hide and harbor bacteria. Initially, this may cause slight gagging but keep at it and the gagging will go away.
Bleeding Gums
Bleeding gums are not normal. Many times, it is a sign that there is an accumulation of bacteria, plaque, stain or tartar. This can lead to an inflammation of gum tissue and easy bleeding upon brushing. Bleeding can also be a sign of gum disease or periodontal disease. When the gum and bone tissue are involved at some point with periodontal disease, the bone around teeth may loosen teeth and become mobile.
If bleeding, loose teeth, bad breath, pus, or pain is present, one should visit the office for a complete cleaning, digital x-rays, and a complete oral / extra oral dental exam.
Flossing
Flossing, should be done at least once a day after a great brushing. There are variety of dental flosses like waxed, unwaxed, ribbon floss, and thin floss. There’s no better floss over another so the one that you find most comfortable should be used.
To make the process easier, floss can be formed into a small (6-10 inch diameter) circle. If you press too hard or hurt your gums, you need to go a bit slower when inserting the floss between teeth and not press down too hard.
